A brief history on the Kiskiminetas River.
The Kiskiminetas River flows 27 miles through western Pennsylvania. It forms in Saltsburg between Indiana and Westmoreland County where the Conemough and Loyalhanna join and travels past Avonmore, Salina, Apollo, and Leechburg to where it joins the Allegheny at Schenley. The river has had a struggle fighting the drainage of several abandoned coal mines and there is a continuous effort to clean its waters. There has been great success proven by the growing fish population and the spectacular fishing. The river is rimmed by woodlands and the historic Saltsburg Canal. Remnants of the walls of the canal still stand along the river’s edge. The river’s beautiful scenery, growing fish populations, and clear waters create an inviting environment for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.
